The DC Furies traveled for the last time this regular season, heading north to take on second-place Beantown.  In unseasonably warm weather, DC played under bright blue skies and a piercing sun.  For the coin toss, DC opted to have the sun at their back, with Beantown kicking.

On the opening kickoff, the Furies were penalized at the breakdown and Beantown opted to kick for touch to set up a lineout close to the tryline.  Less than two minutes into the match, Town had mauled over for a try and the Furies were down 0-5.

Penalties were troublesome all first half as the Furies struggled to adapt to the referee and a scrappy Beantown team.  Repeated infractions disrupted continuity, resulting in stymied offensive attacks and loss of territory.

The Furies were awarded a lineout inside their attacking half, but Beantown stole the overthrow and drove down the pitch to put up their second try of the match.  Beantown’s dominance at the set piece bolstered their attack throughout the match, as the Furies struggled to win clean ball.

With that said, the Furies seized opportunities to attack when they arose.  After Towns’ second try, the Furies were awarded a scrum mid-field and responded with strength.  Flyhalf Maggie Olney received clean ball from the scrum and hung a high ball over the opposing wing. Wearing number 14,  player of the match Judy Dickson recovered the kick on a clean bounce and raced untouched into the tryzone, putting the Furies back in it at 5-10.

The remaining 20 minutes of the half were a gritty back-and-forth affair, resulting in big hits, big runs, and no points for either team.  In the backs, center Lauran Glover and fullback Erica “Muck” Makar put in the hard work on defense.  In the forwards, Patty Smith and rookie Schuyler Brown dominated contact against a tough Beantown forward pack.

The second half proved difficult for the Furies once again, as Town put up a try less than 2 minutes in and finished the game off with three more unanswered tries from there and the 5-32 victory. The Furies bench didn’t let the intensity drop, and the team finished the game out fighting.

The DC Furies play top-seeded New York at home on Sunday, followed by a B-side match.
