The DC Furies were on the road for the third time in four games in 2017.  An undefeated New York side proved to be a difficult matchup for the Blue and Gold.

The opening minutes of the match were promising for a Furies side that came out firing.  Kat Hanson poached a ball deep in New York territory, giving the Furies life.  The Blue and Gold sustained a long period of pressure, but were finally thwarted by a New York interception that eventually led to a try to the Orange and Blue.

The Furies kept it tight in the first half, enjoying some possession and putting together phases. Some potent strike lines from NY backs and forwards gave them the advantage however, and the Furies found themselves down 21-0, but still fighting at the half.

Traveling light, the Furies went to their bench early in the game when untimely injuries took both Lauran Glover and Kiera Johnson out of the game. Backline replacements Chrissy “Goose” Grech and Amanda Hood stepped up against a talented NY line, and hooker Leni Dworkis lent her tenacious defense to the wing as well.

In the second half, a clinical New York side punished off turnover ball, putting up 47 unanswered points.  In a good fight, but a tough loss. The final score was 68-0 to the home team.

Gussie Maguire earned Player of the Match honors for her defensive efforts in shutting down NY’s centers and for her flexibility and leadership in the backline. The Furies forwards saw their hard work in practice pay off, keeping a tight drive on in the scrum throughout the game, and the team got to test depth in the backline, getting lots of minutes for some newer players
