The Furies’ D2 side headed to Baltimore this weekend for a hard-fought battle against Chesapeake.

After weeks of practices and games in sweltering, late summer heat, Saturday’s chilly weather was an abrupt change, and winds added an extra challenge to lineout throws, long passes, and on-field communication.

This was the fourth match of the season for Chesapeake, who are back in Division 2 after winning the D3 MAC Rugby Women’s championship this past spring.

Furies wing Alexa Couture scored the game’s first try just a few minutes into the first half, after an effective pick-and-go at Chesapeake’s defensive 5-meter line. DC kept the pressure on and the energy up, but shortly after Furies inside center Kelly Maranchuck received a yellow card for being offside, Chesapeake sneaked a try in to even the score.

A successful conversion saw Chesapeake take the lead 7-5, but a drop goal from Alexa in the 33rd minute tied it back up. After a try each from rookie flyhalf Anna Wilbourn and 8-man Molly Powers–as well as some phenomenal runs by fullback Sami Topolski Meyerhoff, veteran flanker Arielle Reid, and Captain Brooke Branson–DC ended the first half up 19 to 7.

The Furies kept their defensive wall stronger and more consistent than it’s been this season, thanks to an increased focus on defensive launching during practice. But DC spent most of the second half playing defense, with Chesapeake notching a penalty try in the 65th minute and a late equalizer in the 76th minute. A successful conversion put Chesapeake ahead 21-19 at the end of the game.
