This past Saturday was a beautiful day to play rugby in DC. The DC Furies hosted Harrisburg, the 2017 MAC champions.
With the sun to their backs, the Furies kicked off first, and in less than a minute they regained possession of the ball. A few drops after swinging it wide saw another turnover. The tone of the first half was set—it would be an intense grapple for possession for 40 minutes.
After a well-placed kick by Arielle Reid, the Furies would force Harrisburg into touch within the Furies’ attacking 22. A penalty at the lineout for Harrisburg and the penalty at the scrum for the Furies would result in quick tap by scrumhalf Briley Acker with a pass to 8-man Molly Powers for the first try of the game!
Harrisburg would quickly answer, though, with two tries and showing skill in working the ball to the outside. During the restart kick, Harrisburg knocked the ball on, putting the Furies back on the attack. Off the resulting scrum, Briley received a pop from Molly and ran 30+ yards up the channel between Harrisburg’s forwards and backs to tie the match up again.
The Furies continued to pressure Harrisburg on the attack, with their defense showing marked improvement in launching and lineouts. The first half would end with Harrisburg scoring two more hard-fought tries.
The second half showed the prowess of individual Furies. Special shoutouts go to: Anna Willbourn who made a big 20-yard run into Harrisburg territory, Amanda Bauer who successfully stole a lineout, resulting in Abbie Mocettini making a hard run, and Emma Waite who took great pop pass at pace from Briley for a 15-yard run up the sideline.
Although the Furies showed a lot of heart, it wasn’t enough and they fell to Harrisburg, ending the match 60-12. D2 Head Coach Squirrel Birashk said, “I’m pleased with the first 40 minutes we played. We obviously need to figure out ways to finish stronger. Harrisburg is a great team and it showed today. We’ll regroup at practice next week and get after it at Chesapeake.”
The player of the match for this game is Arielle Reid. Arielle’s hard-hitting tackles and constant pressure make her a force to be reckoned with on the pitch. She also showed strong running and great vision during this game, especially with a well-timed counter kick after the second half kick off.
Next weekend both teams are away, WPL will be taking on New York Rugby Club and D2 will be hitting hard in Baltimore against Chesapeake! – Brooke Branson, D2 Captain
