Join the Washington Women’s RFC this weekend in the conclusion of the spring season. The past few weeks of play were punctuated with tough matches and some hard losses, though not without a lot of heart-felt play a few deserved wins.
In mid-April the D2 Furies lost to the Stingers in the final minutes of the game, as the clock ran into the 84th minute. On the Stinger’s try line, the Furies attempted to earn a few more points before the final whistle in a game that was DC 7- 5 Maryland. A penalty at the tryline gave the Stingers the ball and they punched it steadily down the field. A try to defeat the Furies ended the game. Lesson learned: end the game while you’re ahead. The following day the Furies hosted Beantown. Despite intense play- particularly form the forwards- Beantown took home the W for both the WPL and B-side games.
The next weekend, the Furies played a round-robin with NoVa and Monmouth. In the first period (Furies Blue v NoVa), the DC women were not mentally in the game and left the field with a disappointing, unwarranted loss. In the third period the Furies Gold found energy and intensity from the frustrations of the morning, and the previous week’s losses. The Furies played with heart for 40 minutes and showed their Furies pride in a 7-5 win over Monmouth. Learning from the game against Maryland, scrumhalf Angela Cole kicked the ball out of bounds in the final minute to end the close-scoring game.
This Saturday the season wraps up with a home game Furies WPL hosting Pittsburgh. The weather should be perfect for playing and spectating- grab your blue and gold and come out for one last chance to cheer on the home team before Summer 7’s sets in.
