Last Weekend: Norfolk; This Weekend: Amazons

Furies D2 vs Norfolk Storm

On October 4, the DC Furies faced off against Virginia’s Norfolk Storm.  The day provided perfect rugby weather as both teams gathered on the field for kick off, all 30 players a swarm of blue and gold.  This was the third Division ll game of the season for the Furies (1-1) and, still with many new players on the roster, they started off strong and energetic.

In the first minute of play, there is a nice run down the line as winger, Jessica Crockett, receives the ball and takes it up the field, but with a great tackle by Storm, the ball is turned over.  As Norfolk attempts to make their way up the field, the Furies defense remains strong and steady as tackle after tackle persists in the pack.  Scrumhalf, Angela Cole, has a foot of gold as she kicks to touch perfectly each time.  Much “general awesomeness” is earned as DC keeps that pressure on Norfolk for the first half.  However, with a penalty goal and some good line breaks in favor of Storm, at halftime the score is Furies 0-15 Norfolk.

Beginning the second half, the Furies kick off to Storm.  DC works to keep their power, but Norfolk has good momentum going into this half.  Norfolk scores a try and conversion early, but DC retaliates with their first try, touched down by Crockett!  The score is now 7-23.  The intensity rises as the Furies stay spread on defense to hold Storm and get some great picks off the rucks.  With twenty minutes to go, there is a scrum near DC’s touch and Norfolk scores. The Furies regroup and sub in fresh legs as the time dwindles. With a mixture of frustration and pride the game ends and the Furies focus on ways to improve for their next match (Nov 22) versus Norfolk Storm.

The final score is Furies 7-44 Norfolk Storm.

Driving Directions
**For accurate driving directions enter the intersection of “Nicholson Street and Ager Road, Hyattsville, MD”  Internet/GPS directions to this field can be very misleading!**  From Nicholson and Ager look for the dog park that is visible from the intersection.  The driveway leading to parking and the field is next to the dog park off of Nicholson Street.  Take this all the way to the end.  The turf field has bleachers and a fenced enclosure.

**Don’t forget to plan ahead for rod closure this weekend. Check out the planned interruptions here.**
