GAME TIME

What first got you interested in rugby?
I first became interested in rugby because several of my college friends played. Two of my roommates played and they tried to get me to play for years. My senior year I finally capitulated and I’ve been hooked ever since.

What one or two things do you currently do in your training that are keys to your improvement and success? One thing I do in my training that is a key to my success is to try and focus on integrating rugby skills into all aspects of training. I like to run with a rugby ball and perform strength exercises with good rugby body positioning in mind.

What has been your biggest rugby-related challenge, and what do you do to manage this challenge? My biggest rugby challenge has been the process of learning hand eye coordination. I grew up running track and playing soccer so the introduction of using my hands was a bit jarring. To help manage this challenge I’ve spent time working on passing and catching with a rugby ball and coordination activities with tennis balls.

Best rugby match memory/moment? My favorite rugby match was a semi-final match between the Furies and Scion the summer of 2013 at Harrisburg 7s. The Furies were playing with a motley side and worked hard throughout the course of the day to gel together. The semi-final was a hard fought match and the Furies played with great tenacity and pulled out the win.

What was the best advice you were ever given? The best advice I’ve ever been given is to say yes to fun things.

Do you have a saying or motto
that you live your life by?
I would say that a saying I am inspired by daily is, “knowledge is power.” I think that it is true and I strive to learn something new every day.

Where or who do you draw your inspiration from?Largely I draw inspiration from people in my life, but one source of sports inspiration for me is Muhammad Ali. He was a great boxer, showman, and activist whose hard work paid off in his boxing career.

We hear you like cooking. If you could have dinner with your favorite celebrity, what would you cook?
My favorite celebrity is Joseph Gordon Levitt and if I were to make him dinner I would start off with a nice cheese plate, make a warm spinach salad with bacon dressed and a poached egg. For the main course I would make a spice rubbed rack of lamb served with curried quinoa and a yogurt sauce and for dessert I would make olive oil ice cream.

You’ve been known to play in some pretty fantastic spandex. Which pair is your favorite? My favorite paid of spandex is actually a black and white giraffe print volleyball pair. I find that they are great for wearing about town. Unfortunately the inseam is too short to play rugby in them; they allow for too much chub rub.
