GAME TIME

What first got you interested in rugby?
My best friend took me to a practice in high school and it was love at first ruck!Gussie Maguire 1

What one or two things do you currently do in your training that are keys to your improvement and success?
I practice with the team in Baltimore as well as with the Furies. I try to get as much rugby time as possible, so that I can keep learning from different coaches and players.

What has been your biggest rugby-related challenge, and what do you do to manage this challenge?
I’m a pretty small person, and definitely small for a forward, so going up against much bigger people is always a challenge. But I remind myself that big girls fall harder and I just have to get lower than them, which I can do!

Best rugby match memory/moment?
My u-19 team, the West Carroll Marauders, winning the MARFU tournament to go to Nationals!

What was the best advice you were ever given?
I don’t know if this is really advice, but something that stuck with me is when someone told me, “this too shall pass.” I appreciate it as a reminder that everything is temporary, so don’t sweat the small stuff.

Do you have a saying or motto
that you live your life by?

I just try pretty hard not to be a jerk.

Where or who do you draw your inspiration from?
My college coach, Beth Pepper, who played for the Furies and the national team back in the day!

Getting Silly

If you were immortal for a day, what would you do? I would hug a polar bear!

Favorite pre-game song and rituals: Cinderella Man by Eminem! And I wear or bring the same obnoxious neon yellow shirt to every game.

Funniest rugby memory: My first game was a b-side match against a team that needed some extra players, so a few of our girls were playing with them. I got the ball and then proceeded to stand there like a deer in the headlights while my friend on the other team is coming to tackle me, yelling “Gussie! RUN!” And then she flattened me.

If you were reincarnated as an animal/drink/ice cream flavor, what would it be? I would probably be reincarnated as Grumpy Cat.

If you could coach any team in the world for one day, which would it be? The Canadian men’s 7s team!

Where’s Waldo? Waldo is living a quiet, retired life in Hawaii with his wife, Carmen Sandiego.Gussie Maguire 4Gussie Maguire 3
