March: In like a lion…

There’s nothing like diving back into the rugby season at full throttle.  After inclement weather kept the Furies from taking the field for the first week of March, the season roared to life with 4 days of rugby activities. On Saturday morning, some Furies played some pick-up rugby on the National Mall with GW Women’s RFC players. Sunday, March 9 the Furies held a clinic out in Greenbelt.  Former Eagle and Current Scrum Coach of the USA Women’s Rugby National Team Farrah Douglas came out to work with the DC forwards as they scrummed down against each other for several hours. Farrah Scrum Clinic 2014The Furies also invited the local girls high school team from Eleanor Roosevelt High School to join the clinic; welcoming 17 of their players for the day of rugby. The girls gained valuable time working on specific skills alongside seasoned veterans, and raved about the wonderful experience and fun they had. The Furies are looking forward to seeing them in action at Ruggerfest in our High School/U19 division again this year!

The following evening the team took to the pitch for the first official practice, shaking off the cobwebs of the off season and welcoming new rookies to the team.  Tuesday’s team meeting was uncharacteristically short as the Furies knocked out beginning of season business.

With more nasty weather on the horizon for Wednesday afternoon, the team is holding out hope to finish out a five-day Fury-rugby streak.

With Ruggerfest 2014 less than 2 weeks away, this spring season is wasting no time in heating up.  Planning of the tournament is reaching its peak with everyone chipping in to make another successful Ruggerfest.
