Furies Off the Field: The Holiday Season

Thanksgiving Happenings

In a long-standing Thanksgiving Eve tradition, many Furies gathered at the Bottom Line for pre-turkey revelry with fellow ruggers.  As in years past, the evening was a fun-filled kick-off to the holiday.

Thanksgiving morning, many of the Washington Women ruggers participated in turkey trots in Washington and Bethesda, pre-emptively burning off their calories for the day and giving back to the community.  In a tradition that goes hand-in-hand with Thanksgiving Eve at the Bottom Line, several Furies roused themselves Thanksgiving morning to take part in the Bethesda Turkey Chase, a 10k run.  The event raises money for the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rotary Club and the YMCA Bethesda-Chevy Chase.

Turkey Trot 5kInside the District another group of teammates gathered at Freedom Plaza to run a 5k and support the local charity S.O.M.E (So Other Might Eat).  Registered as a team, the Furies ultimatley helped raise several hundred dollars for the charity that provides comprehensive services for the DC homeless.

After indulging in the holiday spirit, a handful of Furies couldn’t help but strap on their boots and take to the field.  The Mighty Rucks- an off-shoot of the Furies-  took part in yet another Thanksgiving tradition, the New York 7’s tournament on Randall’s Island, NY.  The group of women who traveled to NY made it all the way to the final, losing only to the championship team, and bringing home a cash prize of $500.

NY 7sCongrats to Lauren Rhode, Sam Pankey, Dre Khoury, Eli White, Sharifa Love, Emily Smith, Cynthia Wright, Michelle Perna, and Brigid Beech on their wins.
