The 7’s season is in its home stretch as we head into August. On Saturday, July 21 the Furies traveled to Virginia Beach, VA for the Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) regional competition. The Furies enter this competition after a strong season. In contrast to the spring and fall seasons of fifteen-a-side, 7s play is organized into tournaments. The Furies fielded both competitive and social sides in four tournaments throughout the season, winning two – Lehigh and Cheesesteak 7s – as overall champions. At Lehigh 7’s, this was the Furies’ third consecutive tournament win. Overall, the Furies played an impressive season- the head into the championships with an 18-3 record from the competitive side- with wins and improvement on both the social and competitive sides.
In Virginia Beach, the Furies demonstrated their skills by beating both the Maryland Exiles and Philadelphia Women. In the semi-finals they continued their winning streak with a third shut out, this one against Nova 2. The final match against Nova 1 was called off due to weather conditions, and the Furies were slotted the #2 Mid-Atlantic seed for Nationals. Overall, four MARFU teams will compete at the National Championships: the Furies, Nova 1 & 2, and Philadelphia.
The weekend of August 4- 5, the 7’s team will fly to San Fransisco where the annual 7’s National Championship is hosted. In 2011, the team finished in 4th in the nation and aspire to top that for 2012!
“We have had an awesome season so far despite the challenging schedule and availability conflicts that have kept us from having a consistent lineup from week to week. Everyone who has come out to practices has been consistently improving and bringing up the collective level of play,” says 7s Coordinator, Liz Hirschorn. “We are chomping at the bit for Nationals, as we are peaking in our performance at just the right time and are so excited to play to our potential!”
Following Nationals will be a 7’s National All-Star Championship, taking place in San Diego August 17-19. Congratulations to Furies Brenna Costello, Eli White, Ida Bernstein, Jeanna Beard, and, Liz Hirschhorn who have been selected to participate on the MARFU select side. Good luck to all!
