Seven D.C. Furies helped lead the 2012 Mid-Atlantic Rugby Football Union (MARFU) All-Star team to a second place finish at the USA Rugby National All-Star Championships (NASCs) held May 25th – 27th. Coming in as the #4 seed, MARFU faced off against #1 seed and four-time defending champions the NRU in sweltering 80 degree heat on Friday. The match proved to be the most exciting battle of the entire tournament, as MARFU scored a huge upset, defeating the NRU 14-10 through bringing impressive and punishing defense and spinning the ball wide to their speedy backs.

On Sunday, MARFU Sharks faced off against formidable opponents the Midwest Thunderbirds for the Championship, who featured ten Eagles on their roster. ‘FU put up a great fight – closing the game to 17-8 after 55 minutes. But the Midwest soon pulled away, with a final score of 48-8.

The love and support of the Furies was felt by the MARFU players, as several MARFU Furies shared that they were dedicating their effort on the weekend to their Fury teammates and alumni back home who had helped them reach this moment.

Fury Eli White was named Captain of the MARFU squad, and Fury alum Jessica Hammond served as the MARFU Backs Coach.

Congratulations MARFU!

Thanks to Eli White for contributing this post.
