The USA Rugby Collegiate All-Star 15s Tournament was held this past weekend in Pittsburgh, PA. The competition featured the select side teams from USA Rugby’s seven territories and the USA U20 team battling it out for prestige and notice from national team coaches.
The MARFU team had a strong weekend with a close loss to the South on Friday and a walloping of SoCal on Sunday. The Furies congratulate all the Collegiate players in the MARFU region who tried out for the squad and represented the territory. Great work ladies! Special recognition is due for several members of the Furies Family who had a huge impact on the quad:
Kate Nichol: Furies Assistant Coach, MARFU Collegiate Head Coach
Brenna Costello: Furies Player, MARFU Collegiate Backs Coach
Tanya Gouws: Furies 7s Player, MARFU Collegiate Player
Becca Romash: Furies Player, MARFU Collegiate Player
Full weekend roundup from Coach Kate below:
The coaching staff of the MARFU U23/Collegiate All-stars would like to congratulate the players listed below on a weekend of hard fought rugby. Due to proximity, we were able to take a large squad of 30. Of these 30 players, only 8 were returners. Our average age was 20.5. This speaks well for the future of the squad. We were able to get everyone lots of playtime, with scrimmages against West and Pacific leading off the weekend.
We lost by a single try to the South on Friday. This was a very good game with back and forth scores. South scored in the final 3 minutes and despite our best efforts, we could not put in another try before the final whistle. South was victorious, 17-12. South went on to win the lower tier, with another hard fought victory against Pacific. That final went into overtime before finally finding South on top, 20-15.
We came back Sunday with a resounding victory over SoCal, 42-15. Thanks to the hard work of the starting squad, we were able to dominate the first half of the match. Once we had 30 points on the board, we made an effort to get as many subs in as possible and were happy to be able to get all rostered players into the match.
With the hard work of the players, the coaches, and the support staff, we had a very successful weekend. Though we will end ultimately ranked 7th, we are pleased with the performance of the players, many of whom were noticed by US coaches in attendance. MVPs were Gabby Dixon of Longwood U. and Allie Byrne of Drexel, who both exemplified that good rugby is doing your job with complete effort for 80 minutes.
