On April 16, several Furies had the opportunity to participate in a development camp and game with the MARFU program. Sarah Buhlman, Laura Miller and Becca Romash attended a morning training session and then participated in a game with players from several colleges and universities in the MARFU region. Selections for this development opportunity were primarily based on performance at the LAU U23 tournament that was played in November 2010.
As USA Rugby is restructuring the All-Star structure, the U-23 programs are transitioning into Collegiate programs. In future years teams will be selected only from matriculated undergraduate players, but for this year teams may have a limited number of non-collegiate players who still fall under the old u-23 age guidelines. MARFU coach Kate Nichol, also a Furies coach, will be holding the following selection camps and final selections for the traveling squad are expected to be announced on or about May 23rd.
North Open camp May 8 (Edgley Field, Philadelphia)
South Open camp May 15 (Centerville, VA)
Final Invitational camp May 21st-22nd (Baltimore)
NASCs June 8-12 (Pittsburgh, PA)
MARFU U23 won NASC in 2007 and 2008 and finished 3rd in 2009. Each year, at least a dozen schools have been represented and players hail from all levels of club from WPL to D3 college. The goal of the program continues to be to expose as many players as possible in MARFU to higher level rugby and be successful at NASC.
Congratulations to the Furies who were invited to participate in this development opportunity and good luck to them as they compete for a spot on the traveling squad!
Many thanks to MARFU manager Emily for providing detailed information about the team!
