When did you join the Furies?
Summer 1981 (started w/Summer 7s)
How many years did you play for the Furies?
5– moved to SF in spring 1986
How/why did you start playing rugby?
As a freshman at William & Mary (1977), I called my mom and here’s our conversation:
Me: “Mom! There are two clubs I’m interested in joining!”
Mom: “What ones?”
Me: “Well, one’s the Women’s Rugby Club”
Mom: “Hmmm, that seems kind of rough. What’s the other one?”
Me: “The Parachute Club!”
Mom: “Play rugby.”
Did you hold any leadership positions on the Furies? If so, what were they?
I was Captain my first year … and Match Secretary somewhere along the line … and probably a few other things, but that’s too many years and too many beers ago! 🙂
Tell us about your favorite Furies moment(s)!
-Playing rugby w/such a fantastic, diverse, fun group of women!
-Riding the team bus down to Athens, GA all night Friday night to play in a tournament there Sat-Sun. The amount of laughing you can do when you cram a rugby team on a bus is unbelievable.
-The looks on CJ Lammers’ and my face when, warming up on the side of the pitch before a PRU-EPRU match, our coach announced CJ & I (both loose forwards) were going to play … wing (OF ALL THINGS!!) because we had too many loose forwards and not enough backs. As it turns out, it only took a couple of big-girl hits on those wispy little EPRU wings to make them decide that attacking the middle of the field was a better game plan that day. I think that’s my one and only game at wing, in my 18 years of playing rugby.

Tell us about what you’re up to these days. Family? Occupation? Where are you living?
Lisa & I live in Williamsburg, VA and just celebrated our 12th anniversary; both her daughters are now in college, so come back to visit us when on school breaks. I’m about to retire after 27 years in the U.S. Coast Guard and I think I’m going to be “really retired,” at least for a while. Everyone says I’m going to be bored … I’m not so sure of that. Lisa’s looking at getting her doctorate, so we may be spending a couple years wherever she’s in school. We have a house in Maine and a condo in St. Pete, so we’ll eventually be “snow birds” and spend our summers in Maine, winters in FL, and visiting lots of friends and family on the trips between the two. I’m very much looking forward to this next chapter of our life together!
Life motto/favorite quote!
“The will to win is not nearly as important as the will to prepare to win.” – I’ve heard that attributed to both John Wooden & Bobby Knight
“I am a great believer in luck and I find the harder I work, the more I have of it.” – Stephen Leacock, Canadian political economist (1869-1944)
