February 9th-14th, 15+ current and former Furies took over Las Vegas as “Amandamania” and competed in the Las Vegas International 7s Rugby Tournament (LVI). The LVI was held on Thursday and Friday, and despite some serious disorganization on the part of the tournament directors, Amandamania came ready to play – and have fun!
Named in celebration of Furies Alumni Amanda Fallon’s 40th birthday, Amandamania took the pitch against 3 tough Canadian teams, and two U.S. motley squads made up of players from the Atlanta Harlequins, Austin Valkyries, and Berkeley All-Blues. The team showed improvement each game, playing hard, and losing by a single try in the quarterfinals.
The Furies were so excited to play rugby, several Amandamaniacs took time out of their 7s packed day to join in another match going on and play against the Midwest U-23 15s All-Star team. Another highlight of the tournament was that the Furies’ own Ida Berstein was asked to play with team Rugby Hawaii, who were asked to move up into the Women’s International Tournament. Playing with Hawaii, Ida showed off her speed and talent as she faced off against the US, Canadian, French, Spanish, and Netherlands rugby teams.
As the LVI wound down, the Amandamaniacs went over to watch the International Women’s matches, and were happy to cheer on the USA Women, as well as the Furies’ own Kellie Cavalier, the manager of the US Women’s 7s team! She definitely had her hands full, but showed great support for the players and all the Furies were thrilled to see her there.
On Saturday and Sunday, the Amandamaniacs donned their now famous Star-Spangled Bikinis as they cheered on the teams competing in Sam Boyd stadium in the IRB 7s tournament. They showed plenty of love for the home team, and even made it onto the Jumbo Tron a time or two!
All in all it was a fantastic time, and one that all the Amandamaniacs are eager to repeat next year – don’t be surprised to see the Furies enter two sides in the LVI next year!
